Equip Your Team to Respond with Confidence, Clarity, and Compassion

When the Call Comes, Will Your Team Be Ready for Every Person They Encounter?

Every day, first responders are the first point of contact in moments of crisis. But when they encounter individuals with disabilities—autism, dementia, intellectual delays, or sensory sensitivities—traditional training often falls short. Sirens, flashing lights, and chaotic scenes can escalate behaviors, not because of resistance or aggression, but because of undiagnosed or misunderstood needs.

You’re not unprepared because you don’t care. You’re unprepared because no one has shown you how.

This is where we come in.

IMPPACT—Integrated Mental, Physical, Psychological Awareness Communication Tactics—is a comprehensive program that equips first responders with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to recognize, communicate with, and support every person they encounter, no matter their abilities or circumstances. Beyond the training itself, IMPPACT also provides practical resources such as visual-based universal communication cards and De-Escalation Kits stocked with sensory and comfort items, so you’re prepared for the moments that matter most.

The Problem: An Awareness Gap That Creates Risk

When the call involves a person with a disability, the usual playbook may not work.

  • A patient may not speak.
  • A loved one may escalate because lights, sirens, or touch are overwhelming.
  • A person may not follow commands—not because they are defiant, but because they process danger, pain, or fear differently.
  • Someone may run, resist care, freeze, or shut down.
  • A physical disability may limit movement, communication, or standard treatment options.

These moments can turn fast.

For first responders, the risk is real: a scene can become harder to control, care can be delayed, and a preventable misunderstanding can become a safety issue for everyone involved.

The problem is not lack of commitment.

It is lack of preparation.

Roughly one in four Americans self-report having a disability. Yet many police, fire, and EMS teams are asked to respond without practical training, simple field tools, or a shared plan for recognizing disability-related behavior.

That is not fair to responders.

And it is not safe for the people they serve.

The Solution: Training That Equips, Not Overwhelms

Imppact trains first responders to recognize disability-related behavior before it becomes a crisis.

Built for fire, EMS, and police teams, our First Responder Disability Training helps crews respond with more confidence, less hesitation, and better outcomes.

The goal is not to add one more thing to remember on scene.

The goal is to shape instinct.

Your team learns how people with autism, cognitive disabilities, communication barriers, sensory sensitivities, mental health conditions, and physical disabilities may respond under stress—and what to do when standard commands, touch, lights, sirens, or rapid movement make the situation worse.

Led by Andy Traub, a national disability inclusion expert and first responder advocate living with multiple disabilities, the training gives responders practical ways to:

  • Recognize when disability may be affecting behavior.
  • Use words, tone, space, and timing to de-escalate.
  • Adjust the scene without losing control of it.
  • Communicate when someone cannot speak or respond in expected ways.
  • Support safety for the individual, the crew, and the public.

The Imppact Kit supports the training with simple field tools, including sensory items and a communication card. But the real value is not the kit.

It is the shift in readiness.

When responders understand what they are seeing, they can act faster, communicate better, and lead the scene toward a safer outcome.

Choose the level of support that fits your department

Tier 1: Foundation

Self-paced online training with quarterly support

Tier 1 is built for departments that need a flexible starting point. Employees complete online, self-paced training similar to other standard HR learning models, such as cybersecurity or compliance training.

This level gives departments a shared foundation without requiring live scheduling across shifts, stations, or units.

Includes:

  • Online, self-paced training access
  • Basic disability inclusion and workplace readiness content
  • Quarterly check-ins with IMPPACT
  • Support for one year

Best for:
Departments that want an accessible entry point, basic awareness training, or a scalable way to introduce IMPPACT principles across the organization.

Tier 2: Train the Trainer

Live virtual training for internal department trainers

Recommended level

Tier 2 is where IMPPACT’s model becomes sustainable. Instead of training every employee directly, IMPPACT trains a select group of department personnel who can then train others inside the organization.

This live, virtual two-hour Train the Trainer session equips internal leaders with the language, tools, and confidence to carry the message forward. Departments receive one training session, quarterly check-ins, and support for one year.

Includes:

  • One live, virtual Train the Trainer session
  • Two hours of interactive instruction
  • Training for selected internal personnel
  • Tools to help trainers teach employees
  • Quarterly check-ins with IMPPACT
  • Ongoing support for one year

Best for:
Departments that want lasting internal capacity, consistent messaging, and a practical way to reach employees across shifts, stations, divisions, or locations.

Why departments choose Tier 2:
It builds ownership inside the organization. IMPPACT equips your people, and your people carry the work forward.

Tier 3: On-Site Trainer Development

In-person training, observation, and feedback

Tier 3 provides the highest level of hands-on support. IMPPACT trainers come on site to train your internal trainers, observe at least one employee training session led by those trainers, and provide practical feedback.

This level is ideal for departments that want live coaching, stronger implementation support, and direct feedback before scaling the training across the organization.

Includes:

  • One on-site Train the Trainer session
  • In-person instruction from IMPPACT trainers
  • Observation of at least one internal trainer-led employee session
  • Feedback and coaching for internal trainers
  • Monthly check-ins with IMPPACT
  • Ongoing support for one year

Best for:
Departments that want deeper implementation support, in-person coaching, and a higher-touch partnership.

Enterprise Custom Training

For very large departments and agencies, IMPPACT offers custom enterprise-level training.

This option is designed for major fire, police, and public safety departments with complex structures, large workforces, multiple locations, or specialized operational needs.

Enterprise training may include custom curriculum design, multiple training cohorts, leadership briefings, implementation planning, and department-specific support.

Best for:
Large agencies such as major metropolitan fire and police departments that need a customized, scalable approach.
